So, with my newly acquired collection of dark riders thanks to ebay, I now have 3 units of them. Unfortunately I don't think that 3 will ever make a tournament list, they might make it into our tutorial battles coming up on February 23rd, but I have yet to know who my team mate is, nor what army my teammate will play.

Tactics:
The dreadlord is a killy machine. he has a 1+ armor save, a reverse ward save, AND forces your opponent to reroll his successful ward saves. He will most likely go inside the black guard unit in a 7x3 formation. If needed tho, he can go inside the huge spearmen block, or the frenzied corsairs.. yes the corsairs are making a return into my list due to them being fully painted and I want them to be given another chance after doing so well in the last game I played with them. Funny, I sent them to die and they ended up mopping up units. They will always be deployed in a 6x3 formation giving me 25 str 3 attacks
Obvious chaff are the Harpies, and the two units of dark riders. They will be used to great effectiveness as I can kill my own units faster than my opponent with how I roll dice. My dark riders in the last game I played ended up rolling a grand total of a 4 on a flee distance, that's how awesome they are!
The hydra is in there, because it's a fracking hydra.. I can't make his regen to save my life, but he's a hydra.
I had to take out my unit of knights to fit all this in tho. I love my cold one knights to death, but to be completely honest, they end up either failing to perform, or dying to things that ignore armor saves, or I can't roll a fracking marine armor save to save my life.. Give me a 5+ ward save tho and I make it like candy...
Magic wise. I do like my Death/Shadow mix on my mages. It does give me some redundancies like Withering and Soulblight, but that's ok. It will force my opponent to decide whether he wants one unit that I'm about to blast to the sky in combat or with my shooting, or if he wants all his units within 24" to be effected. It caused my opponent in the last game, who's still relatively new to the game pause to think, even the veterans playing at the table next to me said they would have to decide whether to let spells go through. Especially if they know that I'm sitting on a doom and darkness.
I threw the ruby ring on there as an added way to get a direct damage spell to knock out some regen as it seems that everyone in their mother is starting to gain regeneration these days. It's even worse in the new Warriors of chaos book with all their monsters.
lvl 4 goes in the 10 strong warrior block and just hides behind the rest of the army, level 2 goes with the repeaters.
Shooting has 70 repeater xbow shots, and the 3 from the lifetaker.. If that's not enough to weaken down a few units or completely destroy them I don't know what will.
Against war machines, I have my chaff to deal with them as dark riders, harpies and shades are actually decent in hand to hand.. Now against monsters that's where I'll be questioning what to do. My major combat blocks are either immune to psychology, or have leadership 9 with a re-roll so they will stick around, and most of the time my chaff is going to flee anyway so terror and fear will not be a problem.
