So, I've gotten in a game with my potential, and at this rate, final list for the redstone rumble. I do realize that it's over 2 months away at this point but overall the list works.
Overall Feel
The list feels like it's on the edge of a knife. At no point do you feel that you are secure in your win, or secure in your defeat. This is one thing I really like as at no point will my opponent feel like he's totally in control. It does still rely heavily on the magic phase, but also with 3 hammer units in the list that can actually stand up without magic support IE Hydra, 20 black guard with murder banner, musician, and crimson death wielding champion, and 10 full command flaming banner knights.. who decide to be stupid every time I tried to do something with them!
Death is amazing, not because of the character snipes or purple sun, but with my new favorite spell in the whole game, SOUL BLIGHT. The 24" area of effect -1 str and -1 toughness to all enemy units saved my ass. I was looking down the barrel of 5 charges all which made it in, and I ended up winning the combats because it took the strength down low enough that I was able to make easier armor saves or wound the enemy better. This is a list of all the units that it affected: 3 nurgle chariots, knight bus with bsb and general, hell cannon, and a chimera. a chariot and chimera went into my black guard unit, and the other two chariots went into the knights because they decided to roll two 11's in a row for stupidity checks. This allowed me to put 6 wounds with my black guard (nearly killing each of the two monsters) and causing my knights to actually be able to make a marine armor save and grind the chariots after the initial surge.. having -1 str impact hits helped.
Metal is a good support. I had Searing doom, Enchanted blades, and Final trans.. yes BOTH Fuck your couch spells. I didn't cast Final trans because of the MSU style of my opponents list, but I did get searing doom off on a chimera and nearly kill it. I had to use the lesser version because I HAD to get off soulblight that turn. I didn't use enchanted blades not because it's not a good spell, but at that point I was dumb and was out of range of my knight unit who needed it to counteract nurgle, and I had to get other spells off that point. It's a great spell and I love it tho. having str 4 armor piercing knights at +1 to hit will be amazing.
I am going to continue to run without a dispel scroll. I did feel pressured but that was the best part of the game for me. the fact that I decided on stopping one spell and then having to take that luck to stop it was just fun. I did have magic superiority the whole game tho as my opponent just bought two level 3s.. but he did bring a scroll. The idea of kill the mage before it kills you actually brings that element of risk vs reward.
Unit Analysis
Every unit did what it was suppose to do...The one unit that I will harp on is my cold one knights. they failed 4 stupidity checks, with one of them being WITH A REROLL, over the course of the game.. leadership 9.. and they decide to roll 11's. I don't know the statistical probability(that and my brain is too tired at this point to even calculate that in a 6 turn game) but that's the worse showing of knights I have ever seen.. Does this mean that they are coming out? HELL NO! they still performed admirably, they still tanked chariots, they still are something to fear. I mean, they ground down 2 nurgle chariots, the toughest chariots in the game mind you before being cacophoniced off the table on turn 6. I don't know any other chariot that has -1 to hit and toughness 5 besides the gorebeast. I don't think that I will fail as many stupidity checks over the course of one game as I did in this one and even then the rest of the list can pick up the slack when they do.
Single bolt thrower. Amazing. It provided that threat of, you either charge me or I'll just multishot or single shot your ass. It quadrupled it's points by killing off a chimera and finishing off a nurgle chariot that was running as well as multi shotting every bit of chaff that tried to kill it.
The only unit I am questioning is my 15 repeater xbows. I had a champ on the unit but I forgot him all the time. I'm thinking its easier to just drop the champ, or remember him from now on. odds are I'll remember him in all games so that I can challenge him out to protect the metal mage. My opponent did not have a lot of chaff or light armored troops and I rolled statistically low when shooting at a weakened chimera but there are times that they are friggen lasers doing Fuck your couch. The only change would be to probably drop the unit champ and add in another guy for a total of 16 guys (so 32 shots at full capacity) FUCK shields. it makes them too many points and those points are better spent elsewhere.
Conclusion
I'll be continuing to play this list for the next month. I will probably make minor corrections, but as it stands now, it looks like I'll be taking this list to the rumble. Of course, this is barring anything drastic like... a new dark elf book...I should be observing a game tomorrow so if I have any thoughts on my list based on the observation I will type it up. I think my next update will be a review of the Lizzies that are being released. so stay tuned fellow readers...
