so, I figured I'd write down my entire thoughts about my list, the tournament in general, and how my list is changing going forward under the new book, which Finally I get to use!
Tournament In general.
Overall the tournament was great. It was in a very nice place and in a perfect location. The organizers for all the tournaments going on were great and really were on top of their game. Missions were excellent especially after early playtesting and no real rules questions came up, and no real dicks.I didn't win what I was wanting to, but then again, match ups didn't help me either. At the time of this blog I do not know my standing overall, but I at least didn't get last :)
List thoughts and overall games
The list I took, although fitting for a final hurrah of the old book, quite frankly sucked major donkey kong cock. My match ups were: The other dark elf player(rocking double hydra, unkillable peg, and lvl 2 fire but with executioners instead of BG and witches), Beautifully painted Goblins (yes, pure goblins), Ogres (maneater stubborn block that got a turn 1 charge because I went first and they were rolling like a boss the whole game), Tzeentch deamons (with an amazing opponent who I can't wait to play again and got my best opponent) and Fuck god damn Warriors (unkillable Prince, dual chimera's, 5 skullcrushers of bullshit, The dude was a nice guy tho, I just hated the list)My knights were fucking RETARDED the whole tournament. They either did a long bomb charge when I didn't want them to, didn't make a "guarentee" charge on several occasions, and died way to easily even with cauldron support. Calv in 8th edition can not handle what's in all these new books.
Cauldron bsb was probably the dumbest idea I could have thought of. It's a good buffer, but it just died way to easily with all the cannons, charging scouting man eaters, chimera etc. 225 points wasted because everyone got it into combat turn 2-4
The two bright spots in my list: My black guard with dreadlord and lvl 4 death, but not for her spellcasting.
Black guard were killy, and almost every game they died, but they took down a shit ton of things. the one take away that all my opponets found out, is that they are nasty and that charging them was always a bad idea. They tore through 30 witch elves, 24 Warriors, did severe damage to a gutstar, and held up plague toads.
My lvl 4 tho, gets the mvp of the list. She sucked at the magic phase but in my game against the deamons, she took down a DP with the life taker.. netting me points.. I guess she got pissed and decided to boom, headshot him.
games overall
All my opponents, save for 1, were nice. Even the warriors player who just tabled me because warriors are just a bullshit army to begin with, was a nice guy. The ogre player I faced tho, there was some frustrations during the game. He did apologize after the game and said I was right on a rule that could have swung the game in my favor.Dark elf on dark elf was bloody and came down to my dice deciding to crap out on me in bg vs executioners, but I did cut down the peg lord with spearmen.
The goblin game was fun and I felt a little bad for my opponents rolls. I can't wait to play him again in next year's rumble (as this is two tournaments in a row we've played)
Ogres were just terrible. Stubborn scouting ITP maneaters shouldn't exist with a gutstar that's equally killy, and he always managed to get the charge off because I would roll below statistical average for everything where as the average on 2 dice for him the whole game was 9.
Tzeentch deamons was my best game of the tournament. we both were playing magic heavy armies, and magic decided to leave both myself and my opponent. Having me forget about my Lifetaker bow, only to remember it turn 5 when I could have been shooting at damn beasts of nurgle or flying tzeentch casters the whole game, then having it shoot down a DP was probably the highlight of the game, and the whole tournament. I am kinda sad that I can never again recreate that, although, I will put it into future fluff now.
Last game (and the reason I didn't win best dark elf) Warriors bullshit. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate my opponent and he was really nice, and even after the game we sat around and talked about how my list is going to change and he was really interested in playing me again with the new book at some point, but warriors is just dumb. It's can you kill my deamon prince and two chimera's in 1 turn. If no, then you will never kill him. 2+/5+/2(fire) unbreakable, nurgle, ws9, Sword of striking is probably the one thing that I hope matt ward dies in a fire over (even tho he wrote both high elves and dark elves which both are balanced...although, it's funny how after the warriors book there's now a "design team") I even apologized to my opponent afterwards but he agreed with my frustration on the demon prince. He did find out that if you charge black guard, your gonna have a bad time.
Where do I go from here.
It seems that where my list struggled were against Medium toughness (aka 4-5) High to medium armor saves, and it's weak center block. Also, I rely too much on a fickle magic phase. I tried to "be a man" and 12 dice a spell in my final game, but all 3 turns my level 4 was alive, I only got 3,3,4 for all my magics and I failed to cast every spell by 1 shutting things down real quick. The knights, the cauldron, the spearmen, and the level 2 of metal all are not making the cut. I'm going to unfortunately either have to run a small unit of Black Guard or cut them from the list entirely.
I'm going to have to get something that I've been trying so hard not to get... Executioners. I hate to admit it, but they solve the problems I'm having in this current meta. I will lose out on the re-rolls to hit, but with str 6 KB attacks, they can take on monsters, knights, etc and not bat an eye.
I'm thinking of leaving warriors in all forms at home. With the addition of bolt throwers into the list, I really don't need them. They mostly just failed to hit because I always had to move, and always were at long range and always multi shot.
The hydra right now has made the cut for my list but only because I now have a Khari and I want to protect it from being shot off before it does it's thing.
Combat units:
I'm thinking of at least 1 unit of 28 executioners with a bsb on foot. My bunker is going to be a huge corsair block. I'm debating either running another black guard unit, another 28 executioners, or 2 units of 14 executioners for flanks and general "bend over the table"
Yes, one unit of warlocks have made it. I've trimmed down to just the one unit for now because I don't want to be too much of a dick right now. Granted, my special is currently up in the air at this point so I might end up having 2 units.
Characters is another thing that I'm up in the air about. I currently just have the level 4 general and bsb. Do I go the dreadlord option instead of some executioner chaff to have that guarentee leadership 10 with some combat potential? or just puss out and use standard of disiciple in my corsair unit..
I can't wait to give dark magic a try tho.
Oh well, Let the theory crafting.. Begin!
